Dr. Azizi

Dr. Ghobad Azizi is fellowship trained and board certified in Endocrinology and Metabolism. He has extensive background and training in treating thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. He has performed 900-1000 FNA biopsies of thyroid nodules and lymph nodes annually for the past decade. He has more than 6 years’ experience with strain elastography and over 3 years’ experience with Shear Wave elastography.
Dr. Azizi works in a private practice in Wilmington, North Carolina for more than 15 years. In the past decade, he has published several large prospective studies on thyroid nodules and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and effect of elastography in thyroid nodule management.
In May of 2011, Dr. Azizi accepted appointment to serve on the Neck Ultrasound Certification Council at ACE (American College of Endocrinology) for the 2011-2012 college year.
Dr. Azizi completed a Fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the University of Connecticut, School of Medicine in Farmington, Connecticut and his Internship & Residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Massachusetts, School of Medicine. He attended University of Hamburg, School of Medicine in Hamburg, Germany.

 

Patients’ Choice Award

Dr. Azizi also holds Patients’ Choice recognition, which reflects the difference he has made in the lives of his patients. This honor is bestowed to physicians who have received high marks as voted by patients. Of the nation’s 72,000 active physicians, only 5% were accorded this honor by their patients.*

Dr. Azizi was named one of North Carolina’s “Best Doctors” in 2011 by the Business North Carolina Journal.

Dr. Azizi completed a Fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the University of Connecticut, School of Medicine in Farmington, Connecticut and his Internship & Residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Massachusetts, School of Medicine. He attended University of Hamburg, School of Medicine in Hamburg, Germany.

Dr. Azizi’s previously published study is one of the largest on thyroid nodules. He is also currently involved with several prospective studies.

As of 2013, Dr. Azizi is a reviewer for BioMed Research International.

Michelle L. Mayo, PA-C

Michelle has been the Physician Assistant at Wilmington Endocrinology since February 2009. She works closely with Dr. Azizi and the staff to evaluate and treat patients. She is also involved in the many clinical studies currently being performed in the office.

She received her Master’s in Medical Science with a concentration in Physician Assistant studies in 2008 from East Carolina University. She went to North Carolina State University for Undergrad. She received a BS in Biological sciences and Minors in Genetics and Health, Medicine and Human Values.

Michelle currently holds a North Carolina Medical License. Additionally, she is a member of American Association of Physician Assistants, the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and the Coastal Cape Fear PA Society.
